Matt’s Notes
Welcome, welcome! After a few weeks away, we are back with a chat about a topic near, if not dear, to my heart; namely, the university and how it has engulfed, transmogrified, and otherwise co-opted most post-secondary teaching and learning as we’ve come to experience them in the early decades of the twenty-first century! We’re stoked you’ve joined us!

Doug’s Notes
“Universitization” of education

Universitization can be said to occur when institutions that dispense knowledge in a professional sector, the knowledge itself and the teachers who dispense it are so to speak absorbed by the university … The training staff themselves are confronted with a new dominant status, that of research teacher, which requires them to have a PhD to qualify.
European Ministers of Education, (1999). The Bologna Declaration of 19 June 1999.

… although universitization has assured teachers a training based on scientific knowledge and has stimulated research in the field of teaching, the practical knowledge of teaching has been devalued, limiting the approximation of teachers in daily school education, which Is considered essential for the professional training of teachers.
dos Reis, D. A. (2017). A universitarização dos cursos de formação inicial de professores da educação básica…/The universitization of initial training courses of basic education teachers… Cadernos CIMEAC, 7(2), 82-102.

The concept of university was used in the 13th and 14th centuries for an autonomous community consisting of teachers and students who came together to provide high-level teaching of certain disciplines.
During this universitization process, which bears traces of the history of a country, pauses and accelerations were experienced

Anniversaries are occasions for reflection, and this is also the purpose of this paper.
With its universitisation, teacher education has found itself in a dilemma between two equally important functions: the traditional function of educating future teachers and the new academic, especially research, function.

Before the move to universitization in France, midwifery training was conducted in hospital schools. Since then, midwifery training bodies have gradually been integrated into universities.
