Earlier this week, Doug and I had the chance to speak with Dr. Norm Vaughan, Professor with the Education and Schooling Faculty at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Norm has had an rich and varied career across a wide range of settings, contexts, and locations! He is the author of numerous articles, presentations, books, and he joined us to speak about his latest book Principles of Blended Learning: Shared Metacognition and Communities of Inquiry (2023)! We also get into a whole lot of “other”!

Friends, I was utterly stoked to learn while we were preparing to record that Dr. Vaughan and Dr. Reid know each other well from some years… decades!… back!
Furthermore, Norm was greatly obliging when it came to sharing resources… above and beyond those provided below!
Some of the highlights from the notes that Doug, Norm, and myself prepared via Google Docs… at least for me!… include:
Norm is looking forward to the forthcoming book Generative AI and Education: Digital Pedagogies, Teaching Innovation and Learning Design (Pratschke, 2024). Based on my view of the publisher’s page, this is going to be essential reading!
Furthermore, all three of the books on blended learning that Norm has helped author are all, respectively, essential among e-learning titles generally… and blended learning in specific! Blended Learning in Higher Education was a key text for me during my doctorate… and subsequently!
My final point in these notes… which I spoke to during the recording… is that with the new book, Principles of Blended Learning: Shared Metacognition and Communities of Inquiry (2023) we are seeing further expression and delineation of CoI principles vis-à-vis the seven principles of blended learning!
Furthermore, the meaningful and significant reference to Indigenous ways of knowing throughout the book is, to the best of my knowledge, entirely new to CoI works… and a welcome move forward! More of this, please!
