Folks, I was expecting to enjoy my chat with Dr. Jon Dron, Associate Dean, Learning and Assessment in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Athabasca University… I was not expecting to have as much fun as I did! While we were talking about his latest book How Education Works, we ended up going many other places as well… including into the ten years he spent as a professional musician! Please check it out below, if you’re cool enough!
You (didn’t) hear it here first! #ednontech
Matt’s Notes
I’ve been aware of Jon and colleagues’ many and significant works since I began my doctoral work, back in around 2012! As mentioned during the episode, I cite Jon’s works no fewer than 15 times in my 200-page-ish doctoral thesis! To say that his work has been influential on my thinking would be a supreme understatement!
I’ll go further… Anderson & Dron’s (2011) paper “Three Generations of Distance Education Pedagogy” should be required reading for anyone involved in teaching post-secondary in any way that involves the internet in any way shape or form!
Furthermore, apart from the fact that his latest book is supremely practical, useful, and… significantly… highly readable… Jon’s website is eclectic, thoughtful, and… SOMEHOW!… highly entertaining… it is updated on the regular and I couldn’t recommend it enough!
I had such a great time with Jon during our chat… besides his many brilliant and varied works across various areas of the educational endeavor… it was legit so cool to talk with a fellow lifer on the path of music… that connection runs deep, friends!
Thanks a million Jon, and thanks to you for checking this out!
Jon, thank you muchly for being here! & also anybody else!
