Matt’s Notes
Hey hey, my my… #ednontech will (hopefully)(probably) never die!
As we’re going full-on EPISODE TRIFECTA… i.e., three episodes being released probably in one or two days… I’ll not let these notes get in the way of a completely arbitrary production schedule!
Thanks and/or you’re welcome!
Er… this episode is all about creativity in ed tech! I will resist the temptation to suggest this may be a paradoxical thing… but not too strongly! Please click wherever you feel like clicking!
Are we not all indebted to our mothers in one way or other?? #ednontech
All RIGHT! Speaking further to the stunt production! I’m composing the notes for both this episode and EPISODE 55… are you ready?… AT THE SAME TIME…
What you call “kamikaze work methods” we call “Sunday”!
It seems like during the recording I had a goodish amount to say. So, in terms of furthering that… I’ll jump into the musical things probably first…
A Tale of Two Platforms / 90’s Punk Legends
We are, interestingly in this springtime wherein two of my all-time favourite musical artists have new releases out within a short period of one another… and so the previous two episodes references and musical selections by Leatherface… and this episode’s indebtedness to Hot Water Music… clear as mud? If not, hopefully it will be…
Complete Discography: Jesse
Vows: Hot Water Music
This came out in late April. It compiles the one album and numerous singles from the mid-90’s period when Leatherface was on hiatus and Frankie Stubbs wrote and recorded and toured music with a couple of other bands…
The latest album from three decades-long running band Hot Water Music, from Gainesville, FL… otherwise known as the hometown of Tom Petty…
Bandcamp
Patreon
As I recently discussed on the music podcast, I am so stoked for this platform. It’s been sitting there in plain sight forever. There are a few artists who have proprietary files for sale… that don’t appear on streaming services… and while I probably ought to remove a bunch of the stuff I’ve accumulated there over the years… it’s a way better platform than I remember…
i.e, some of Paul Westerberg’s most recent original music ended up there… sometime shortly after the Replacements reunion five or eight or whatever years ago…
Hot Water is new to the Patreon game.
A couple friends of mine… maybe even more passionate about Hot Water than I am… have refrained from joining… as something of a “money grab”…
From my standpoint… as somebody who lacks the ability to go to another city to see them perform… I’m happy to spend 10$ Canadian per month for the extra interviews… some highly worthwhile musical content exclusive to the platform… and really the engagement with others who, as you might expect, have more in common than just an affinity for the band…
Plus, I’ve stopped paying for any other media subscriptions or services besides Apply Music… so it’s good return on the (media) dollar…
Meditations, Book 4 (Marcus Aurelius)
And… further to the alternate methods described in the audio… I tried having the recording DICTATE the audio to Google Docs… but my computer has no external speaker… and so, on playback, isn’t strong enough for the “voice type” feature to engage properly…
ANYWHO
…The ruling power within us takes a flexible approach to circumstances, always adapting itself easily both to practicality and the given event… It is like a fire mastering whatever falls into it. A small flame would be extinguished, but a bright fire rapidly claims as its own all that is heaped on it, devours it all, and leaps up higher in consequence.
Meditations, Book IV
Thirty Things About Hot Water Music (Mostly Without Google)
- Hot Water Music formed in 1994 in Gainesville, Florida.
- They have a brand new album out this week called Vows… coming out 30 years into their existence as a band… and they are in the midst of touring it internationally… throughout 2024…
- In 30 years they’ve added one new member… and lost zero members…
- They have TWO significantly dope split LPs: with Leatherface (1999) and Alkaline Trio (2002)
- There are even more split collaborations if you include 7″ vinyl… i.e., the Bouncing Souls (2011), Terror (2022)
- The Leatherface split is for sure the first record of theirs I heard.
- Followed closely by Fuel for the Hate Game… and Forever and Counting…
- Guitarist and singer Chuck Ragan has a whole boatload of solo records in a folk tradition that are all worth checking out.
- Guitarist and singer Chris Wollard has a good five records at least if you count 7″ vinyl with his band the Ship Thieves that are all totally worth checking out.
- Guitarist and singer Chris Cresswell has I don’t even know how many records out with his long-running Toronto band The Flatliners… all their albums are worth checking out…
- Drummer George Rebello has been the long-time drummer for New Jersey punks The Bouncing Souls for… a long time…
- George, Wollard, and bassist Jason Black all still live in Florida.
- Chuck lives in Northern California and runs a fly-fishing operation.
- Cresswell lives in Toronto.
- Cresswell has been in the midst of touring his recent solo album The Stubbornness of the Young which is totally worth checking out.
- Wollard has remained in Florida for all the band’s touring activities since at least 2019, when Cresswell stood in for him on the 25th anniversary tour.
- Wollard and Cresswell both contribute equally to writing and recording and promotion of current recordings including Feel the Void (2022) and Vows (2024).
- At one point in the early 00’s, Chuck stepped away from Hot Water… and so Jason, George, and Wollard released and toured an album as The Draft…
- Their new Patreon group (running since April) is totally worth checking out… for some of the reasons described above…
- Hot Water Music is the name of a book of short stories by legendary American writer Charles Bukowski.
- My first and only time seeing Hot Water live was in Vancouver in September, 2022 at the Vogue Theatre downtown.
- Vancouver Island singer Northcote opened for Hot Water on that occasion…
- Northcote joined Cresswell on a co-headlining tour of venues in Canada, the US, and Europe supporting their respective recent releases…
- Wollard is an avid golfer… on the Patreon, he recently shared a 13-minute clip of a golf trip with his son…
- Chad Darby plays bass for Wollard’s group Ship Thieves… and also for legendary California punks Samiam…
- Wollard provided studio assistance and contributed vocals to two songs on Samiam’s amazing Stowaway LP from last year…
- I honestly have no idea without the help of Google what Jason Black gets up to musically outside of Hot Water… and I am going to avoid cheating by trying to find out… BUT I’M SURE IT’S AWESOME…
- Jason has a bass named Duchess.
- Their new LP Vows has contributions from all over the place including: Turnstile! City and Colour! Thrice! And many more…
- You should really do yourself a favour and check out this record… and/or the Patreon group…

Creativity in Ed Tech
Summing up the author puts forth a word of caution before the teachers, who will have to face an ever increasing and heterogeneous group of learners. The tools and techniques of educational technology would definitely enable them to face the challenges easily.

The field of creativity is not paid enough attention in educational technology.
Creativity as being a product includes a very fast enlightenment in mind bearing ideas related to a [sic] problem solving, a topic for an article, a plan for research, a work in literature or fine arts, a new theory, unknown technique or method.

Myth 1: The technology tools we have today should drive how we conceptualize teaching and learning in the 21st century.
Myth 2: Creativity can be taught in a content neutral manner.
The kinds of understanding that emerge from this truly take advantage of 21st century technologies for deep (in)disciplined learning. This is learning that breaks disciplinary boundaries to cross-pollinate ideas, and thus helps students become creative divergent thinkers!

… research discourses around educational technology and creativity have rarely intersected. Nor has the instantiation of these ideas in actual classroom contexts been comprehensively researched.
Interest in creativity has been fueled by the afordances [sic] provided by digital technologies, including, but not limited to, massive connectivity and the creation of virtual environments with new possibilities for learning.
