Matt’s Notes
Hi there! Thanks a lot for checking out this latest edition of the EnT!
This episode we’re talking work/life balance! It feels appropriate given that we’re in the final days before we launch into a brand new academic year! Please click below to watch and/or listen as per your preferences!
Too many strands in these here interwebs to try and detangle now! #ednontech
Well, congrats to all of us!
Another summer under our collective belts!
A bit of housekeeping: we’ve updated the Land Acknowledgment section of the website to reflect the fact that I’ve moved from one coast to another in recent months…
I feel lately like I’m starting out again in lots of ways… and that’s cause I am! New job in a new city… working in a new industry… living WITHOUT MY KIDS… was that a little loud?
But I’m feeling pretty settled, all things considered. My body is, despite the typical complaints of a mid-life person, ticking along as optimally as it ever does…
I’m just about at the point where these notes will have some actual academic and/or professional content. But… it’s a weather check… the wind is carrying that autumnal tinge…
There’s a 3 day novel writing contest over the Labour Day weekend and to be honest, my thoughts are spending most of their non-work time humming on what that might entail…
Thanks to Doug for keeping this #ednontech rolling! Thanks to the Stoic writers and contemporary translators and commentators for putting out so many of these awesome little books…
Here’s hoping you don’t find yourself more unbalanced than you can handle in the coming fall season!

Balancing the load: Educator work life balance
The teaching fraternity is chosen as they play a very pivotal role in the development of future generations. It is, therefore, essential to see that their work is not affected by their own personal needs, and hence the need for Work Life Balance (WLB).
Miryala, R., & Chiluka, N. (2012). Work-life balance amongst teachers. The IUP Journal of Organizational Behavior, 11(1), 37-50.
The concept of work-life balance comprises of three words i.e. work, life and balance, and broadly include proper prioritizing between work (career and ambition) on the one hand and life (health, pleasure, leisure, family and spiritual development) on the other hand, and the balance is satisfaction and good functioning at work and at home with a minimum of role conflict.
… work life balance also helps the faculty to be more productive in their job accomplishments with their personal commitments and family affairs.
Punia, V., & Kamboj, M. (2013). Quality of work-life balance among teachers in higher education institutions. Learning Community-An International Journal of Educational and Social Development, 4(3), 197-208.
Several studies have amply demonstrated that work-family conflict affects both workers’ attitudes and the organizational behavior, such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, turnover, absenteeism and organizational citizenship behaviors.
Maeran, R., Pitarelli, F., & Cangiano, F. (2013). Work-life balance and job satisfaction among teachers. Interdisciplinary Journal of Family Studies, 18(1).
… work-life balance addresses not only the structure of conflicts and family, but involves other concerns such as health, leisure activities, personal development and community commitments.
