Matt’s Notes
Welcome, welcome! We’re stoked to have you aboard for the latest episode of the EnT! No special occasions here… just the latest in our series on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. Click below as per your preferences!
I’m going to confess that… as my personal life has taken on new dynamics through my new relationship… my perspective on many things is changing.
Hence being a vegan.
Hence being more mindful of— and engaged with— the LGBTQIA2S+community… and the many challenges and issues these folks deal with on a daily… hourly… basis.
I’ve read two books… one about the global meat industry, the other interrogating contemporary norms surrounding sex, intimacy, and monogamy…
So, inasmuch as my lived experience within my body has shifted… so accompanies a shift in perspective…
I’ve been unemployed for 14 months nearly to the day… and my days are actually pretty excellent… as I remarked to my mom the other day during our too-infrequent phone calls (which is on me): if this was what the rest of my life was going to be like, I’d be OK with that…
But for the need of mazuma… and possibly an online thesaurus…
As I mentioned in the podcast, I feel pretty removed from my doctoral thesis on Social Presence in MOOC’s… not just in time (six years in September) but also in my detachment from most career-related things generally…
In terms of e-learning things, I taught myself how to create a LYRIC music video for Samiam’s great new song Monterey Canyon… essentially a music video with burned-in captions… using footage of octopi from Pixabay and Shutterstock… all of which required me to up my Camtasia game… while speaking to the sanctity of all kinds of life through the beautiful lyrics and the evocative, vaguely mysterious movements of these sensitive, dynamic, downright SOCIAL mollusks (see what I did there?).
I’d also like to give a shoutout to Doug who… in the nearly two weeks (!?) since this episode was recorded… was very patient with my ongoing production delays… and who in this time created an absolutely sick digital card for the podcast…
Also, Doug is now on LinkedIn… and I’ve revamped my profile for the first time in many years… we’re “branching out” as much as possible (see what I did there?) across as many platforms and apps as we can. Socialness abounds!
In the world of writing, I’d prefer to go much longer… but in the world I am now inhabiting… namely, dinner hour on Wednesday (Pacific Standard Time), I’m visiting my lovely friend’s house… and we’ll be having dinner and probably some TV episodes soon…
As such, I bid you adieu! Doug and I are fully engaged and committed here, I think… and there’s no reason to imagine we won’t be doing this for many more months in the future… if not years…

A Deeper Dive into COI – Social Presence
Social presence consists of:
- communication between and with the instructor and all members of the class,
- interaction with the instructor and all members of the class,
- relation of a learning community throughout the term, and
- moves from introduction to community to camaraderie.

… we went back to the origins of social presence as was formulated by Short et al (1976). It turned out that their definition actually represents two constructs, namely (1) ‘social presence’ (as the degree of ‘realness’ of the other in the communication), and (2) social space (as the degree to which social interpersonal relationships are salient).

The main framework has evolved from a description of the learning process in a social constructivist paradigm to an empirically testable construct within an objectivist paradigm.

As access to and use of computer conferencing increased during the 1990s, online educators began to think more and more about how the lack of non-verbal and relational cues in computer mediated communication influences the social process of teaching and learning.

Motivation is essential to assuming responsibility for self and co-regulated (shared metacognition) approaches to learning. Conversely, self and co-regulation is conducive to enhancing motivation.
