Matt’s Notes
Hey there! We are well and truly into the holidays… Doug and I both hope you are having a calm, safe, peaceful few weeks… if that’s what you want!
We were talking pedagogy of abundance towards the end of Episode 11… and, while there are many people who have been involved in developing this concept… Dave Cormier is the person who I was thinking of… as speaking to it most publicly. I’m not going to pretend to give Dave any kind of introduction… except that he’s one of the most interesting people in our #edtech field… and a lot of my doctoral work references his work at UPEI (along with other colleagues). Here are a couple of videos so that I can close a couple of tabs!
Rita Kop has spoken to a pedagogy of abundance… as “far back” as 2011…
I’ve done more reading from the Ignaces’ book… which helped inform some of our discussions in this episode…
There’s a more substantive set of notes lurking in the background of these ones… but this is the tip of the er… digital iceberg*… in terms of all the small acts of communication, synthesis, and creation that led to this specific manifestation vis-à-vis the WordPress site…
*”Digital iceberg”… a new metaphor for ed tech… or not??
As mentioned several times in the episode, I’m really enjoying Lives of the Stoics: The Art of Living from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius… it’s reader-friendly, and helps satisfy my inner philosophy minor… and my latent but long-standing interest in ancient histories… and also helps me make sense of my… “self-employed”, single dad, post-academic, post-divorce actions and personhood…
I’ll give the final word in these notes today to Samuel Beckett. Wishing you all a warm, safe, happy, and not unduly absurd holiday season…
Doug’s Notes
Lifelong learning: Does technology help, hinder, or both?
My bias: I am a lifelong learner & I have no plans to stop
Today, technology is not only a tool, but also a resource for accessing information that further enables learning. New opportunities and ways to integrate technology into the learning process are being created every day.

The AUSMT course was designed as a result of discussions and previous trials of the authors’ fields of research which include online education, authentic professional development, collaboration, and effective multimedia design.
Additionally the course included scaffolding activities to support novice users of social media tools and to encourage experienced users of the tools to contribute with their expertise.

We argue that technology, data, and evolving AI applications affect how humans enact and experience life and work, changing the context for learning.
… the focus on learning to adapt and develop new skills, identify opportunities for change, and be ready to modify stable trajectories of life and work is as critical as ever. Lifelong learning (LLL), a term carrying a range of meanings, had traditionally been used to refer to processes and systems supporting learning throughout adulthood and work life.
Poquet, O., & De Laat, M. (2021). Developing capabilities: Lifelong learning in the age of AI. British Journal of Educational Technology, 52(4), 1695-1708.
… a shift in rhetoric from LLL to generational learning is also needed in order to eliminate ‘doublespeak’ and satisfy the needs of today’s generations who have arguably been brought up with a utilitarian view of education and high economic expectations.
