I&#8217;m in a new city! My kids are here with me, spending much time with their Grandma and other rad family people! My new job is great! My new colleagues seem excellent so far! I&#8217;ve travelled across Canada 3 times in four weeks, and the last time it took two days! And we&#8217;re doing it all over again in just a couple of weeks! And I&#8217;ve just lately contracted COVID! After going the entire pandemic without it! I think!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"470\" src=\"http:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/lol-falling.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-789\" style=\"width:776px;height:570px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just another day with the LMS, amiright?? #ednontech <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Doug&#8217;s Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Tool Investigation &#8211; Rubrics<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"236\" height=\"177\" src=\"http:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-763\" style=\"width:574px;height:431px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increasing student dissatisfaction with assessment and feedback is an issue of international concern in higher education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Standardised marking rubrics have been implemented in some institutions to address this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rubrics are viewed favourably by both staff and students as a method of enhancing consistency in assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Co creation of rubrics with student enhances their acceptability and utility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubrics are used most effectively when they are co-created with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubrics can enhance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>student performance&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>students&#8217; perceptions and use of feedback.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>students&#8217; higher order learning&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>those learning outcomes that are related to critical thinking and writing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-assessment and self-regulation can be developed so enhancing the ability of students to understand and make use of feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rubrics make clear what the expectations were for the work and that the rubric helped students construct their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Results indicated that students with access to a rubric performed better than students without in three areas:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>higher marks,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more accuracy in self-assessment, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>higher scores for self-regulation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students who did not like standards find the rubric less helpful than those that were happy with the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cockett, A., &amp; Jackson, C. The use of assessment rubrics to enhance feedback in higher education: An integrative literature review. <em>Nurse education today<\/em>, <em>69<\/em>, 8-13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-762\" style=\"width:839px;height:839px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture5.jpg 300w, https:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture5-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usefulness of rubrics&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students identified that access to a rubric prior to an assessment, with an explanation provided improved their confidence in the assessment process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students felt rubrics helped to clarify the expectations of academic staff in relation to the assessment task<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>students used the rubric as a \u2018recipe\u2019 that helped guide them and that it acted as a resource which they could use to complete their work to the required standard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students found the criteria used in the rubric to be comprehensible and useful, the rubric was also used to;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>assess progress,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>structure the work, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to reflect on their own competency in completing the work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>alignment of the rubric to the assessment was important for student engagement with it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jonsson, A. Rubrics as a way of providing transparency in assessment. <em>Assessment &amp; Evaluation in Higher Education, 39<\/em>(7), 840-852.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"491\" src=\"http:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-761\" style=\"width:841px;height:688px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/analogue-trope.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Picture4-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The use of rubrics enhanced the dialogue and relationship between instructors and students.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rubric was used to assess different pieces of work,&nbsp; the relationship between the instructors and students was enhanced with a shared meaning and expectations developing about the assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rubric making expectations clear it was also found that students used the rubric to self-assess.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Co-creation of rubrics\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shared understanding could be developed not just in the preparation of the rubric but also throughout the formative and summative stages of an assessment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This enhances students&#8217; performance and their satisfaction with the assessment process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Men\u00e9ndez-Varela, J.
