The concept of truly self-determined learning, called heutagogy, builds on humanistic theory and approaches to learning described in the 1950s. It is suggested that heutagogy is appropriate to the needs of learners in the twenty-first century, particularly in the development of individual capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hase, S., &amp; Kenyon, C. Being self-taught has been regarded by the elite with a mixture of patronising indulgence, suspicion and admiration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst traditional models of credentialism, the authority of received knowledge, the authority of the role of the teacher and the ingrained processes of intergenerational transmission seem close to breaking and expose themselves as being profoundly inadequate and inequitable in an era of globalisation, fast capitalism and digital neo-corporatism, it may be that understanding the cultural history of particular modes of learning, such as the figure of the autodidact, will help us make sense of how we imagine the purposes and nature of education in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sefton-Green, J.
